Aston Villa are the new favourites to sign West Ham's out-of-favour Robert Snodgrass.

The Championship club are hoping to take the Scottish international winger on loan for the remainder of the season, despite rivals Sunderland having been considered most likely to complete a deal until today.

Snodgrass, who West Ham paid around £7.5million for just seven months ago when moving from Hull City is thought to be keen to team up with former boss Steve Bruce, currently in charge at Villa Park, once more.

The 29-year-old was recently informed that he was surplus to requirements at the Olympic Stadium and according to reports, has already held preliminary discussions with representatives of the Championship club.

When asked about his club's purported interest in Snodgrass on Monday, Villa assistant manager Colin Calderwood claimed he was unaware of the situation.

"I've heard the rumour but I am not party to all that information, so I can't enlighten you," he told reporters.
