Gold cooling expectations

David Gold has given the first indication that new manager David Moyes will be expected to effect any January changes on the cheap.

The club's co-chairman, speaking on the day that the club's 16th full time manager was unveiled told Sky Sports that whilst they expected him to recommend the acquisition of fresh faces, it is unlikely that Moyes' list would be extensive.

"He will be telling us [what he needs]," said Gold. "We’ve got to give him a little time, he only arrived this morning. He will be telling us what he thinks we need.

"It wouldn’t be a lot.

"Let’s face it, we believed at the beginning of the season that we had the best squad of players for a decade. But no doubt he will tell us where the weakness is."

On the face of it, West Ham should have a substantial war chest available for the new manager having offered £25million in August for William Carvalho - although that claim, made by Gold's partner David Sullivan, was later denied by Sporting, the midfielder's club.
