The Spanish press are linking West Ham with an imminent move for Brazilian midfielder Gabriel Appelt Pires.

Currently contracted to La Liga side CD Leganes, the 9million-rated Gabriel is said to have been closely monitored by the Hammers who are seeking to take him on loan for the rest of the season, with view to a permanent transfer should that prove successful.

However they are likely to face stiff opposition from his current club, to whom he is tied until 2021 having signed a five-year deal in the summer of 2016. Leganes are reported to have slapped a 20million (17.75million) price tag on the player - or around double the figure West Ham are likely to offer.

Gabriel has spent his entire pro career in Europe, having moved from Brazil as an 18-year-old in order to join Juventus in a 2 million switch from local club Resende.

During his time with La Vecchia Signora, he featured for six clubs on loan (including a season back with his his former club) without making a single appearance for the first team. In August 2015 he moved on to Leganes, initially on a season-long loan deal, before making the move permanent 18 months ago.
