Former Hammer Vic Keeble has passed away following a short illness at the age of 87.

The Colchester-born striker spent three years at West Ham between 1957 and 1960 and was part of the hugely-successful promotion-winning squad that led United back to the First Division in 1957.

Having started his career with his North Essex home town club, Keeble went on to join Newcastle United for whom he made more than 100 apperances between 1952 and 1957, before joining West Ham in a 10,000 switch.

Keeble, soon formed a formidable partnership with fellow forward John Dick and went on to score 23 goals in his first season at the club (Dick adding a further 27 himself), helping the Hammers towards the Second Division title.

And a further 20 goals in West Ham's first season back in Division One helped Ted Fenton's side finish a very respectable sixth in the league.

Keeble scoring in a 3-1 win for West Ham against Middlesbrough in April 1958

Sadly his career was to end prematurely at the age of 30 when he sustained a serious back injury whilst featuring for West Ham at Fulham in October 1959. At the time he had scored 51 goals in 84 games (in all competitions) since moving south from Newcastle.

After retiring from the game, Keeble continued to work in admin roles for both Colchester and fellow Essex club Chelmsford City. He spent his final years close to where he was born. The thoughts of everyone at Knees up Mother Brown are with Vic's family.
