Hammers eye Championship striker

The latest player to be linked with a transfer deadline day move to West Ham is a Championship striker who is out of contract next summer.

Despite rumours of interest in established Premier League goalscorers such as Olivier Giroud and Islam Slimani, West Ham are reported to have turned towards the lower leagues with time rapidly running out.

And 25-year-old Preston North End forward Jordan Hugill has been named as the latest target for the Hammers, who have submitted a string of desperate last-minute bids as the Board attempts to boost David Moyes' wafer-thin squad.

Hugill has already been the subject of rejected £8million bids from Championship clubs Reading and Leeds United but North End are holding out for an improved bid from a top flight club, with Crystal Palace also rumoured to have expressed interest.

But Preston boss Alex Neil insists his club have no plans to part company with the player. "We’ve got no intention of selling Jordan," he said.

"A team has come in with an offer and we’ve rejected the offer. That’s where we are at the moment. We’re not scrambling around trying to sign a replacement, we’re not intending to sell Jordan.

"When you’ve got Premier League teams courting you then there’s going to be a desire to leave. But that will be on our terms. If the terms are not met then that will not happen."
