Pedro Obiang has started the long road to recovery after undergoing an operation on his damaged knee.

The midfielder has been sidelined since damaging knee ligaments during the 2-0 FA Cup 4th round defeat at Wigan Athletic and recently travelled to Spain for treatment.

And West Ham's chief medic Gary Lewin has confirmed that the operation was a success - although he expects 25-year-old Obiang to remain out of action for several months yet.

“Pedro has undergone surgery to repair the medial collateral ligament, and we’re delighted with how it went," Lewin told West Ham's website.

"He went to a specialist in Barcelona for the operation and he is in the best possible hands as the rehab process gets underway.

"Pedro is likely to be out for a little while, but we are confident that he will return fit and strong in ample time for pre-season."

West Ham United's #14 has been at the club for two-and-a-half years having joined from Sampdoria in the summer of 2015 in a £4.3million deal.
