Stuart Pearce has revealed that he found an unlikely ally when visiting an England rugby training session on Tuesday.

With West Ham enjoying a weekend off, David Moyes' assistant manager spent a day with the England rugby team, including head coach, Australian Eddie Jones, at Pennyhill Park in order to learn more about the motivational methods used in the game.

However Pearce was surprised to discover that 58-year-old Jones - who grew up in Tasmania, thousands of miles away from east London - was a big fan of the Hammers! "He mentioned that over dinner," Pearce told whufc.com.

"Then again the club played a really good brand of football and some of the individuals who played that he mentioned are household names and legends of this football club."

And Jones revealed exactly why he turned to the claret and blue when growing up. "I told Stuart I used to be a West Ham supporter," he said. "We had some great chats about West Ham.

"I used to love Billy Bonds, Trevor Brooking and Frank Lampard and I liked that claret and light blue jersey. They had those big tough defenders - I loved Billy Bonds for some reason - and Brooking was the artist at the front.

"He always reminded me of [cricketer] Greg Chappell playing football. It was interesting talking about how David Moyes is trying to revive West Ham now."

Pearce was a guest of Jones' at the training session, having stood in for David Moyes who was initially invited but unable to attend due to a previous engagement.
