Beggars can't be choosers: Fonte departs

Central defender Jose Fonte has completed a move to Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifang.

The Portuguese international cost West Ham some 8milllion when joining from Southampton in January 2017, just 13 months ago. The club are thought to have recovered around 5million of that outlay from Fonte's new club.

Fonte, 33, made just 24 appearances during his time as a Hammer, which was blighted by injury. Prior to recently returning to first team action, the defender had been sidelined since October with a serious injury.

However his exit from West Ham became a formality from the moment co-owner David Sullivan told the Guardian newspaper that his sons David and Jack had "begged me not to sign" either Fonte or fellow transfer window arrival Robert Snodgrass, who cost 10million from Hull.

Snodgrass made even fewer performances for West Ham - just 15 - before being sent on a season-long loan to Championship side Aston Villa, where he has been one of their most consistent performers so far this season.

The two players effectively replaced United's best player Dimitri Payet, who was sold back to former club Marseille during the January 2017 window having asked to leave.
