Fonseca out of the running

Paulo Fonseca has turned down the opportunity to become West Ham United's latest manager and agreed to sign a contract extension with his current club.

The Shakhtar Donetsk boss flew into London earlier this week for talks with United co-owner David Sullivan, on the same day that David Moyes pulled out of the running for the position he had held between November and May.

However in a statement posted on Shakhtar's website tonight, Fonseca confirmed that he had rejected West Ham's overtures and agreed to extend his stay in Ukraine.

"I had a desire to continue my career in Shakhtar," he wrote. "It was extremely important to feel that the club want me to stay to continue the work that we started two seasons ago.

"We need to work hard to continue to win on domestic and international fronts. Shakhtar will still demonstrate beautiful, attacking football. I believe that the fans will be proud of their club."

The front-runners for the vacant post remain Rafa Benitez and Manuel Pellegrini, although Claudio Ranieri's sudden availability - following his departure 'by mutual consent' from Ligue 1 side Nantes - has resulted in his name being mentioned frquently in association with West Ham today, too.
