Manuel Pellegrini has thanked Chilean police after the new Hammers boss and his wife, Carola Pucci, were victims of an armed robbery.

Pellegrini and Ms Pucci were heading to a restaurant in the Vitacura suburb of Santiago on Saturday evening when they were confronted by armed muggers. According to reports, Ms Pucci's handbag was stolen although nobody was hurt.

The thieves fled the scene in a stolen Porsche Cayenne and later fired shots at police who were in hot pursuit, before forcing a squad car off the road - leading the new Hammers boss to write to police and say 'thank you' for their assistance.

"Thank you to @Carabdechile your quick and courageous reaction," Pellegrini wrote on twitter. "I appreciate the support of the people. I hope you are given more powers to police and solve the issue of crime as soon as possible."

Santiago Chief of Police, Gonzalo Munoz, confirmed that an incident had taken place whilst confirming that the perpetrators were still at large. "They fired two shots at officers and threw road spikes down to stop them following as they sped off," he said. "This resulted in a police car being damaged.

The Porsche used to facilitate the robbery was later found abandoned by police. Pellegrini will return to the UK later this month ahead of meeting his new squad for the first time.
