Wilshere, who has won more than 30 caps for England so far was available on a free having left Arsenal, his only previous professional club, following a string of injuries that constantly interrupted his career.

However having made 38 appearances last season for Arsenal and 29 during the 2016/17 campaign whilst on loan at Bournemouth, both he and his new employers will be hoping the worst is behind them.

"Iíve got good memories of my childhood supporting West Ham, watching them at Upton Park," Wilshere told whufc.com upon the confirmation of his arrival. "It feels good, and my family and a few of my friends are West Ham fans so everyoneís buzzing!

"I want to be playing here in front of the Hammers and the bond Iíve had with the club since my childhood will make it even more special."

West Ham United's new Director of Football Mario Husillos welcomed Wilshere to the club, insisting that his "vast experience" will help improve the squad.

"He has shown that he has game-changing abilities on the biggest stage as well as having the creativity and intelligence to make a real difference," he said.

"He is a passionate man and has shown winning characteristics throughout his career. Jack will be a great addition and we look forward to seeing his undoubted quality in a West Ham United shirt over the coming years."
