Solid as a rock

Summer signing Ryan Fredericks believes that West Ham's new-look defence is going to be far more durable than last season.

Despite ending the season in 13th place, West Ham conceded 68 goals during the last campaign - more than any other Premier League side bar Stoke City, who were eventually relegated in 19th place.

But having introduced the former Fulham right-back plus fellow defenders Fabian Balbuena and French Under 21 Issa Diop over the summer, Fredericks believes that the Hammers - under the expert guidance of Manuel Pellegrini - are set for a far less frustrating year.

"Were working on a lot of things in training defensive-wise," said the Hammersmith-born full back. "Its different to what any of the lads have done before, but I can see on the pitch that its working already.

"There are a few little things that weve got to get used to, but were not conceding chances every five or ten minutes. Were looking a lot more solid and I think, if we cut out some of the silly mistakes, were going to be a much more solid team and harder to break down."
