New role for Scaloni

Former Hammer Lionel Scaloni has been named as the new interim manager of the Argentinian national side.

Following the dismissal of the colourful Jorge Sampaoli, who left his post after Argentina's disappointing World Cup campaign ended, the Argentinian FA have announced that Scaloni - alongside Pablo Aimar - will take control of the team on a temporary basis.

"The AFA informs that, after the meeting of the executive committee, Lionel Scaloni will direct the next friendlies of the Argentine national team, along with his assistants Pablo Aimar and Martín Tocalli," read a brief statement from the AFA.

Scaloni is of course well known to Hammers fans, having spent the latter half of the 2005/06 campaign on loan at the Boleyn Ground during Alan Pardew's tenure and having featured in the 2006 FA Cup Final.

Having fallen out with then-manager Joaquín Caparros, Scaloni left Spanish side Deportivo in order to join the Hammers on the final day of the 2006 winter transfer window - effectively replacing the outgoing Tomas Repka at right back.

And despite fitting in well during his brief stay at West Ham, it will be for his error in the closing minute of the FA Cup Final that he will always be remembered by Hammers fans.

For it was Scaloni's panicky clearance that fell to the feet of Steven Gerrard, allowing the Liverpool captain to equalise and sent the match into extra time...

Since hanging up his boots at the age of 35 Scaloni has been coaching with Seville, where he was assistant to Sampaoli before the latter was named as Argentina's national coach. He is one of eight Argentine players to have represented West Ham - the others being Mauricio Taricco, Javier Mascherano, Carlos Tevez, Mauro Zarate, Manuel Lanzini, Jonathan Calleri and Pablo Zabaleta.
