A record-breaking night

West Ham United's 8-0 defeat of Macclesfield Town at the Olympic Stadium last night was the joint second-highest win in the club's history.

On just one occasion since 1895 have either Thames Ironworks or West Ham United scored more than the eight goals recorded last night in a senior competitive fixture.

And that happened some 35 years ago back in 1983, when Tony Cottee led the way with four goals as the Hammers beat hapless Bury 10-0 in a Milk Cup second round tie.

However last night's rout of the Silkmen was the sixth time in which the Hammers have scored eight in a fully competitive fixture, and also the first for 32 years, since Alvin martin's unlikely hat-trick inspired an 8-1 win over Newcastle Utd in 1986...

West Ham United's greatest wins

1. West Ham Utd 10-0 Bury (Milk Cup 2nd Rd, 25/10/1983)

3. West Ham Utd 8-0 Sunderland (Division One, 19/10/1968)

Ferguson, Bonds, Charles, Peters, Stephenson, Moore, Redknapp, Boyce, Brooking, Hurst , Sissons (Goals: Hurst 6, Brooking, Moore)

4. West Ham Utd 8-0 Rotherham (Division Two, 8/3/1958)

Hufton, Hodgson, Earl, Collins, Smailes, Cadwell, Yews, Earle, Watson, Gibbins, Ruffell (Goals: Watson 6, Gibbins, Yews)

In addition to the above, West Ham Utd/Thames Ironworks have scored seven goals in a match on 12 separate occasions between 1899 and 1968 - all at home, bar a 7-0 win away to Dartford in an FA Cup qualifier on 28 October 1999.

The club have also scored 11 goals twice in non-competitive fixtures, versus Crystal Palace in a London Wartime Combination match in April 1918 and later in a War League South clash with Southend Utd in October 1940.

Six months prior to the Southend thrashing, the Hammers scored ten against Chelsea in another (non-competitive) War League South fixture.
