In praise of Issa

Hammers fans have been rushing to praise new signing Issa Diop after the central defender gave a near-faultless display against Tottenham last weekend.

Of all the players who could have considered themselves unlucky to be on the losing side during Saturday's derby, Diop can consider himself particularly hard done by following an excellent display alongside Fabien Balbuena at the heart of West Ham defence.

And his performance was widely hailed by fans post-match, who whilst disappointed with the result continue to be impressed by the former French Under 21.

"I love the guy," wrote KUMB member 61dicksey. "He made three or four superb interceptions and tackles and is a proper player. He has everything - pace, power, intelligence and commitment. I hope we can hang on to him as he is class."

Whilst fellow member Longaz added: "He's easily our best summer signing and was absolutely brilliant against Spurs. This time next year we'll either have a top top player or a big profit from his sale.

"I'd rather we had him but the vultures will be circling, you can guarantee that."

Meanwhile Junco Partner described Diop's performance as 'magnificent'. "Those telescopic legs just stretch out and win tackles he has no right to win, like on Kane during the first half today," he said. "He bullied Spurs' front line and deserved to be a winner."

And finally, WCPete felt that he and fellow youngster Declan Rice are the two main reasons to watch West Ham presently. "The way they go from strength-to-strength every match and the way they have the composure of veteran players makes the mouth water," he said.

"That's the foundation for an excellent spine of the team if they keep developing as they are. We've got to find a way to keep them. And we need to get some players in around them. Won't be easy. If they continue on their trajectories, we're going to have a fight on our hands next summer."

Despite receiving considerable praise for his recent performances, including Saturday's, Diop himseld admitted to being disappointed by the defeat. "Itís very disappointing because we had chances, their Ďkeeper had a big game and Tottenham were more clinical than us," he said.

"It was the same against Brighton as we had chances but we didnít score, so we need to work on that and I hope we will score more goals in the next game.

"I played normal, but we conceded a goal and we didnít win, so I canít be happy with my performance. I want to test myself against the best players and Kane didnít score, but we didnít score either, so we lost the game."
