Andy Carroll made his long-awaited return to action on Thursday as a West Ham XI beat Brentford in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Griffin Park.

The striker, who is yet to play a competitive fixture for West Ham this season featured as a strong West Ham team ran out 2-1 winners, courtesy of goals from Robert Snodgrass and a Javier Hernandez penalty.

"It was a good match for the boys and particularly for the players who are maybe not playing in every game," said manager Manuel Pellegrini. "We played well, we played with intensity.

"Andy Carroll, Lucas Perez and Angelo Ogbonna all put in good performances. At this point we donít have space for them in the starting XI, but they worked very hard today."

And on Carroll specifically, Pellegrini admitted that he was delighted to see the big striker return.

"It was good to see Andy play 45 minutes without any problems," he said. "He is a player who, when he comes on the pitch, offers different things, so I hope he can stay fit from now until the end of the season as he is always an important option."

Pellegrini's thoughts were echoed by Aaron Cresswell, who also featured in the friendly success. ďIt was great for Andy to get back out there," he added. "Heís had a frustrating start to the season after what happened in pre-season and itís obviously never easy for anyone with injuries.

"It was fantastic to see him back out there and hopefully now he can get more minutes and more games under his belt and really push on, as we all know what a handful Andy can be for anyone to defend against."
