Fabian Balbuena is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after it was revealed that he requires an operation to resolve a knee injury.

The Paraguayan international limped off during the first half of last month's 2-0 home defeat against Watford, having sustained the injury during a routine tackle on Roberto Pererya.

And according to KUMB sources, Balbuena could be out for another month or more having been told that he requires minor corrective surgery to resolve his knee problem.

The 27-year-old central defender had formed a formidable partnership with fellow new signing Issa Diop prior to sustaining the knock and was a firm fixture in Manuel Pellegrini's favoured starting XI.

His place has been taken by Angelo Ogbonna, who has himself been linked with pastures new in recent days.
