Gomez? You never know!

The Sporting Director of Celta Vigo says that he hopes his club can retain the services of sought-after striker Maxi Gomez - but says that he cannot guarantee that will be the case.

West Ham's pursuit of the exciting young striker is the big story of the current transfer window, but with less than a week of January remaining the chances of securing a deal for the 50million-rated Gomez are getting slimmer.

However when asked whether or not he was confident of keeping Gomez at Celta, Felipe Minambres refused to commit - due largely to the sheer financial muscle possessed by Premier League clubs.

"I believe that we will retain our most important players because it is the intention of the club to be strong," he said on Friday. before adding: "But with the English, you never know."

The Uruguayan international is available for purchase should West Ham choose to trigger a 50million release clause in the 22-year-old's current contract.

Representatives of West Ham have been in close contact with counterparts at Celta this week attempting to hammer out a deal for Manuel Pellegrini's main January transfer target.
