Manchester City 1-0 West Ham Utd

A dubious penalty was enough to ensure that West Ham left the Etihad Stadium empty-handed tonight after pushing reigning league champions Manchester City all the way.

Despite spending much of the game on the back foot, West Ham were slightly unlucky to come away with nothing from a game in which neither side managed to seriously test their opponent's goalkeeper.

And in the end it took the award of one of the softest penalties you will see this season, by match official Stuart Atwell, to separate the two teams.

Just shy of the hour mark, substitute Bernardo Silva - on the field for a matter of minutes - went down inside the penalty box having barely been challenged by Felipe Anderson, who was adjudged by the official to have impeded the Portuguese international.

Up stepped Sergio Aguero to convert the spot kick which ultimately secured all three points for tonight's hosts.

West Ham may have only enjoyed two shots on goal during the game but City stopper Ederson had to be at his best to deny Andy Carroll, whose effort from an acute angle nearly caught out the Brazilian.

And that was the closest Manuel Pellegrini's side - who were being given odds as wide as 28/1 by some bookies ahead of the match - came to producing an upset.

We'll have a full match report for you soon...
