Post-match press conference: Manuel Pellegrini v Manchester City [video]

Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini insisted that the penalty which sent West Ham spiralling to defeat at the Etihad Stadium should never have been given.

West Ham went down 1-0 to Pep Guardiola's title-chasers on a night in which they made have been second best, but defended with great determination.

And had referee Stuart Atwell not pointed to the spot for what has been roundly described in the media as a "soft" penalty on the hour mark, the Hammers may well have left Manchester with an unlikely point.

"It happens a lot of times around the box," said a disappointed Pellegrini. "Manuel Lanzini had the same play but didn't throw himself to the floor. If we'd lost this game through another action you could perhaps accept it - but not that penalty."
