Not a bad season, says Pellegrini

Manuel Pellegrini believes that West Ham have performed as well as they possibly could have this season - but still called for improvement ahead of the campaign's final five fixtures.

The Hammers boss believes that chronic injury problems have contributed to United's inability to effectively challenge for a European spot this season - even though he maintains that that particular challenge is still alive.

"My target was to demand from everyone an ambitious mentality," Pellegrini told the media during his pre-match press conference at Rush Green this morning. "We still have a mathematical chance for Europe and we must try for that.

"I always demand more from the players, from myself and from everyone. You ask if it's a good season? Nine games before the finish we were not fighting against relegation, with an average of five or six players not available.

"From that point of view, it's not a bad season, but we must demand more. We must try to play every game with improvement and evolve. The most important reason for any inconsistency is the amount of players we couldn't use.

"That's the only reason we couldn't have a better season.

"The ambition is always to improve. You must demonstrate that in every game. This season, we have had some very good games but also some important losses too. We've analysed that and next season our target must be to improve."

Pellegrini begins a tough climax to the current campaign at Old Trafford tomorrow when the Hammers visit a Manchester United team who have lost four of their last five matches.

Three challenges against fellow top half sides - Tottenham, Leicester and Watford - follow thereafter with just one match - the home game against Southampton - remaining against a team currently entrenched in the bottom half of the Premier League.
