Rice was my HotY, says veteran defender

Pablo Zabaleta believes that Declan Rice should've been crowned as the latest Hammer of the Year.

The Argentinian defender, who recently signed an extended one-year contract with West Ham spent much of the 2018/19 campaign playing ahead of the eventual winner Lukasz Fabianski.

However the popular right back believes that Rice - who marked the season with his first call-up for England having switched international allegiance from Ireland - was unlucky not to be the main recipient himself, when asked who he would've voted for.

"I have been here for two years now and I've seen him grow and develop, make improvements and make his first international appearances," said Zabaleta.

"Because I like to see the young lads do well, I'm going to say Declan Rice, but I'd also make a special mention for Lukasz Fabianski."

And unexpectedly perhaps, given his previous employers, Zaba insisted that his favourite win of the season was the 3-1 defeat of Manchester United back in September, when goals from Felipe Anderson, Marko Arnautovic and a Victor Lindelof own goal helped West Ham to all three points.

"My favourite moment was beating Manchester United at home, for so many reasons," he added.

"It was an important win for us as it was our first victory at the London Stadium in the Premier League. It also followed our first win of the season in the league at Everton. I managed to get an assist for Felipe's goal, plus it's always nice to get one over United!"
