West Ham have announced the capture of Espanyol's reserve goalkeeper Roberto Jimenez on a free transfer.

The Madrid-born stopper, an imposing figure at a shade under 6'4", has spent the last three seasons as an Espanyol player and understudy to current #1, 37-year-old Diego Lopez.

That situation restricted the Atletico graduate - full name Roberto Jimenez Gago - to just six first team appearances during the 2018/19 campaign - all in the Copa Del Rey.

He spent the second of his three seasons on Espanyol's books - 2017/18 - on loan at Malaga, who were relegated after ending the season bottom of La Liga with just 20 points from their 38 matches - although they conceded fewer goals than the two team relegated alongside them (Deportivo and Las Palmas).

Prior to joining Espanyol, Roberto - who will spend the next two seasons at West Ham - enjoyed spells with a string of clubs in Spain, Portugal and Greece, where he was Olympiacos' first choice 'keeper for three seasons between 2013 and 2016.

His full career stats are as follows...

Atletico Madrid (2009-10): 0 appearances
Benfica (2010-11, 8.5 m): 13 appearances
Real Zaragoza (2011-13, 8.6m): 71 appearances
Atletico Madrid (2013-14, 6m); 0 appearances
Olympiacos (2013-16, loan/2.5m): 111 appearances
Espanyol (2016-19, 3m): 12 appearances
Malaga (2017-17, loan): 34 appearances
