He was once tipped to become a future England international - but could now be heading to the Championship.

Reece Oxford, like so many before him was tipped to become the crown jewel of West Ham's Academy when he signed his first lucrative contract at the age of just 16.

However three years later and Oxford - around three million quid the richer already thanks to that £20,000-per-week contract - could be heading to the Championship for a reunion with former boss Slaven Bilic.

Bilic was recently appointed as the new manager of West Bromwich Albion and, according to speculation from the Midlands, has already framed Oxford as a potential signing for the season ahead.

The Croat's new club were knocked out of the Championship play offs by eventual winners Aston Villa in the semi final and are poised to lose key defender Craig Dawson - who has already handed in a transfer request - this summer.

The Albion link follows news of Oxford's failure to agree terms with Bundesliga outfit Augsburg, who had already agreed a €4.5million fee with West Ham, according to The Telegraph's Sam Wallace.

The 20-year-old is reported to have insisted on the inclusion of a relegation release clause in his contract - a request the German club were not willing to adhere to.

Oxford made his debut for West Ham at the age of just 16 in a memorable opening day win at Arsenal in 2015 - since when he has barely featured for the Hammers. In the three seasons since, he has featured just once - for a grand total of four minutes.

* Rumours suggesting that Manchester United are prepared to offer £45million plus a player in exchange for West Ham's emerging central defender Issa Diop have led to the Hammers issuing a stiff rebuttal.

However French journalist Julien Maynard claims that Diop is keen to move to Manchester despite West Ham's rejection of their opening offer.

The French defender moved to West Ham a year ago in a £21million switch from Ligue 1 side Toulouse, signing a five-year contract.
