FA Premeirship
West Ham United 1-0 Manchester City

Saturday, 15th April 2006
by Graeme Howlett

West Ham recorded their 14th Premiership win of the season against Manchester City this afternoon thanks to a first half goal from Shaun Newton.

The former Wolves player - who cost the Hammers just ??10,000 when he signed from the Championship side last year - struck on the quarter-hour mark to notch his first ever senior goal for West Ham, and three more points for West Ham.

Bobby Zamora - back in the starting XI at the expense of leading goalscorer Marlon Harewood - set up the goal; his cross from the left-hand side was converted from 12 yards out by Newton, making only his seventh start of the season.

However City - who slipped to their sixth successive league reversal - can consider themselves unfortunate to take nothing from the game after they created plenty of chances, and had two efforts ruled out for offside.

The first of those came in the first half, when former Hammer Trevor Sinclair - who has an excellent game - was adjudged to be offside when he bundled the ball home from close range. Darius Vassell then saw his second-half effort ruled out for the same offence.

The win lifts the Hammers up two places in the table to seventh, after Wigan lost 3-1 at Newcastle (who climb to ninth) and Bolton went down 2-0 at home to Chelsea.

Player Ratings

Jimmy Walker
Made two top-class saves, the one from Sinclair was a contender for save-of-the-season.

Lionel Scaloni
A really 'Jekyll and Hyde' performance. Sometimes dreadful, but made a goal-saving block from Samaras.

Paul Konchesky
Not bad but first touch, crossing and free-kicks all still poor.

Danny Gabbidon
Very imprressive, our best defender on the day.

James Collins
Did well, won a lot of headers.

Hayden Mullins
Excellent first half, faded a little in the second but played well.

Nigel Reo-Coker
Solid game, made some good runs as well.

Yossi Benayoun
Much better Yossi, dangerous throughout.

Shaun Newton
Very good effort - and a very well taken goal. Am I the only one wondering why we haven't used him when resting players earlier in the season?

Bobby Zamora
Great movement, and did brilliantly in setting up the only goal.

Dean Ashton
Really very poor today, should have been brought off at half time.

Substitutes

Marlon Harewood
(Replaced Zamora, 65) Did well but didn't make a major contribution.
