Javier Mascherano

San Lorenzo
Squad Number: 16
Position: Midfielder
Born: 8th Jun 1984 (San Lorenzo)
Signed: 31st Aug 2006 (£0)
Contract: Details unknown
Previous Club: Corinthians

Javier Mascherano was one half of the 2006 deadline day transfer deal that rocked football.

Along with fellow Argentinian international Carlos Tevez, the young midfielder joined the Hammers in a deal best described as shady - not that that fact could spoil the delight of many thousands of Hammers fans across the globe.

The tough-tackling Argentinian - who won a gold medal at the 2004 Olympics as part of the successful national side - first made a name for himself at River Plate, before moving on to Brazilian club Corinthians in a $15m deal in 2005.

Mascherano became globally reknowned after some excellent performances at the heart of his nation's midfielder during the 2006 World Cup Finals.

Everton

0-2: Sunday, 3rd December

(Replaced Spector, 84) A long way off of what he should be – looked very sloppy. Gave the ball away for the second goal.

Everton

0-2: Sunday, 3rd December

(Replaced Spector, 84) Has hardly played so I don't want to be too harsh. I'll call his short cameo... interesting. At best.

Blackburn Rovers

2-1: Sunday, 29th October

Did not play.

Tottenham Hotspur

0-1: Sunday, 22nd October

Not his best performance, though I’d like to see him and Mullins start together again.

Tottenham Hotspur

0-1: Sunday, 22nd October

Dwelt on the ball far too much and misplaced pass after pass.

Portsmouth

0-2: Sunday, 15th October

(Replaced Benayoun, 86) Not quite sure what his introduction so late in the proceedings was supposed to achieve but whatever it was it didn’t appear to work.

Portsmouth

0-2: Sunday, 15th October

(Replaced Benayoun, 86) Had no time to make an impact.

Manchester City

Decent passing but was mostly quiet.

Newcastle United

0-2: Sunday, 17th September

Not match fit and therefore unable to match the impressive start of Thursday.

Newcastle United

0-2: Sunday, 17th September

Still not 100%, but his class was evident in flashes.

Newcastle United

0-2: Sunday, 17th September

Clearly a cut above the rest but he seemed to struggle a little today - which is hardly surprising as this was only his second game.

Newcastle United

0-2: Sunday, 17th September

A class act who never gives the ball away although could he perhaps offer more going forward? Still, when you have to play without a midfield partner…

Palermo

0-1: Thursday, 14th September

Oozes quality. Passing accurate, lively in the middle of the park, wants to get stuck in.

Palermo

0-1: Thursday, 14th September

A fine debut. Looked extremely comfortable on the ball in the same way that Mullins often doesn’t. He won’t catch the eye in the same way as his compatriot but on this showing he’ll be a great acquisition.
