Fans foxed by Connolly news

Hammers fans have reacted angrily to the news that striker David Connolly is being sold to fellow Championship rivals Leicester for a mere £500,000.

It was revealed earlier today that the two clubs had agreed a fee of £500,000 for the Irish international, who only joined West Ham 11 months ago.

And supporters - still reeling from the news that Michael Carrick is being hawked around - have criticised the club for selling yet another international for peanuts.

"I can only see this as a negative move, especially to one of our nearest 'rivals' in this division," said RM9 Hammer. "I've yet to renew my season ticket and the way things are going, I'm not going to either.

"We need 3 or 4 quality players fighting for selection up front apart. At the moment we now have two strikers who are only being pushed for their place in the team by Richard Garcia."

Other supporters have laid the blame for Connolly's departure at the feet of Alan Pardew, who is thought to have wanted the Irish striker out of the club for some considerable time.

"If Conners was dispatched because of this 'angry ant' tag, it makes a mockery of Pardew's man management skills," said Hammerite. "Teams are full of different personalities, with differing abilities; good managers manage the personalities - while the poor ones either alienate them or sell them.

"Surprise, surprise - this news came after the season ticket renewals!"

It is possibly West Ham's worst kept secret that Pardew and Connolly failed to see eye to eye; it has been suggested that their rift goes back to last season, when Connolly snubbed then-Reading manager Pardew in order to sign for West Ham.

However when Pardew signed for the Hammers he claimed that there would be no problems between them, despite the former having heavily criticised the latter for failing to join Reading.

Despite that, rumours of a rift continued - and Connolly was first linked with a move away from Upton Park back in January, when a proposed move to Wolves failed to materialise.

At the time, Pardew said of the rumours:

"I guarantee that David won't be going to Wolves - and that he will be a West Ham player until the end of this campaign."

Judging by today's events and the wording of that statement, it would appear that Connolly's card has been marked for months ...
