It's (almost) in our own hands

West Ham go into their final two games knowing that maximum points will be enough to avoid relegation - IF Arsenal beat Fulham tomorrow.

Due to the nature of the remaining fixtures, a 41 point haul - the current tally of 35 plus 6 more - would ensure survival for the Hammers, although given the opposition (Bolton and Champions-elect Manchester United) that would represent something of a monumental achievement.

With thanks to KUMB member CologneHammer, we offer this brief explanation:

"If we beat both Bolton and Manchester United, we will finish with 41 points.

"Middlesbrough currently have 40 points and are yet to play both Fulham and Wigan. If 'Boro lose both, West Ham will finish one point ahead.

"If either Fulham or Wigan fail to beat 'Boro then neither of them can reach 41 points.

"Fulham or Wigan can then get a maximum four points (a win plus a draw against 'Boro) leaving Fulham with 40 points and Wigan 39.

"So IF we win both of our remaining games we are mathematically safe - but only if Arsenal beat Fulham tomorrow!"

Nice and straightforward ...
