Aitor Karanka says his Middlebrough side will need to be at their best in order to beat West Ham this weekend.

The Hammers have won four of their last six Premier League fixtures but visit the North East this weekend hoping to avoid back-to-back defeat on their travels having lost 1-0 at Leicester earlier in the month.

However the 'Boro boss - who team have also shown recent signs of improvement, despite remaining just two places above the relegation zone - believes his team will still have to be at their very best to stop the Hammers.

"It's a really important game," he said. "They are only five points above us in the League. I think we've improved since we played them in London and hope we can keep on improving."

And one man he believes they'll have to stop is Andy Carroll, who scored a stunning goal against Crystal Palace at the Olympic Stadium last weekend.

"Carroll is a really good player - but behind him they have a lot of good players," added Karanka.

"They qualified for the Europa League this season because they are a good team, they have a good manager and we'll have to look after every single ball."
