Angelo Ogbonna is set to miss the rest of the season after it was revealed that he requires knee surgery.

The Italian international was part of the team that won 3-1 at Middlesbrough this afternoon, shortly after which manager Slaven Bilic revealed that he is set undergo surgery that is likely to sideline him for the remainder of the current campaign.

"I have to praise Angelo Ogbonna, because he has played the whole season with an injury," Bilic told the media at his post-match press conference.

"He needs an operation on his knee to be fit long-term, and it was supposed to be a couple of weeks but we asked him to play.

"He will now have surgery after today's game which will rule him out until the end of the season."

Ogbonna will be replaced in the short term by new signing Jose Fonte, who joined West Ham yesterday in a ?8million switch from Southampton.
