Co-chairman David Sullivan says that the decision to allow Dimitri Payet to return to Marseille was ultimately down to Slaven Bilic.

Speaking via the club's website on Sunday evening, after the news of Payet's ?25million sale to L'OM had been confirmed, Sullivan also placed on record his "disappointment" at the manner of the French international's departure.

"I would like to make it clear that we have no financial need to sell our best players and that the decision to allow Payet to leave was in accordance with the wishes of the manager and the interests of squad unity," he said.

"To be frank, my Board and I would have preferred for him to have stayed in order to make an example of him, as no player is bigger than West Ham.

"The club would like to place on record its sincere disappointment that Dimitri did not show the same commitment and respect to West Ham United that the Club and fans showed him, particularly when it rewarded him with a lucrative new five-and-half-year deal only last year."

Speaking just before Christmas, Bilic gave no indication that Payet had expressed a desire to return to France. "He's very motivated, is up for the schedule in the rest of the year and is acting and talking about only about West Ham," he said.
