Dimitri Payet has finally opened up on his reasons for leaving West Ham in order to rejoin former club Marseille.

Speaking at a press conference this lunchtime (Tuesday) to confirm his return to Ligue 1, the 29-year-old claimed that he needed to go home - despite insisting that he will remember Hammers fans warmly.

"I lived an exceptional year at West Ham, I have a great memory of the fans of the club," he told the assembled media.

"Going back to Marseille is a personal choice. I no longer felt well at West Ham, I needed to return to my roots. Marseille is a very pleasant city to live in.

"I needed to come back to France to Marseille - it was a personal choice. I don't need to justify my behaviour. I spoke to Slaven Bilic. I don't want to talk about this at the moment."

And when asked whether or not money was a factor in his move, Payet replied: "If I was in this for the money, I would have been in a different country a very long time ago.

"It is not my motivation. This has been a sacrifice financially, but money doesn't drive me."
