Brooking: Zabaleta would be perfect

Hammers legend Trevor Brooking says Pablo Zabaleta would be a perfect signing for West Ham.

The 32-year-old full back said his goodbyes to Manchester City fans last weekend after it was revealed that he would not be offered a new contract.

And Brooking believes that the Argentine would represent an excellent start to the club's summer transfer business, should he -as expected - complete a switch to West Ham.

"I'd be delighted. He'd be absolutely perfect," said the former midfielder. "He can play in a few different roles.

"But more than anything, the West Ham team have lacked leaders. When things have gone a little bit dodgy during a game and you're looking around wondering who's going to bet hold of it, put a couple of tackles in, Zabaleta would be perfect for this group of players at the club."

Meanwhile the 32-year-old right back recently revealed that he hopes to secure a new contract - either here or abroad. "I am not getting any younger but I can play for two more years and have got offers from different countries," he said.

"The Premier League is the greatest competition in the world and to come back and play against [Manchester] City would be tough - but we will see what happens."
