It was over before it began!

Jose Fonte has left Chinese club Dalian Yifang by mutual consent - less than six months after leaving West Ham.

The Portuguese defender was the subject of a ?5million offer from Yifan at the end of February, leading to Fonte moving to China a year after West Ham paid ?8million to sign him from Southampton.

However heis on the move for the third time inside 18 months having made just seven appearances for the Chinese Super League club. "My time in Dalian and Chinese Super League comes to an end," Fonte wrote on Instagram.

"I would like to say a big thank you to everyone I met and made friendships [with] along the way. Unforgettable experience and I'm blessed to have been treated in the best way by everyone.

"I'm forever grateful to all Dalian fans and to the great country of China. I hope I left something good, at least I tried my very best!"

According to reports the 34-year-old, who featured in all four of his country's World Cup fixtures, is hoping to return to England in order to have one final crack at the Premier League.

Fonte made a total of 24 appearances for West Ham, although much of his time at the club was spent on the sidelines as a result of injury.
