Manuel Pellegrini has refused to comment on West Ham's purported interest in Genoa striker Krzystof Piatek.

According to various reports West Ham are said to have made an offer in the region of ?35million for the highly-rated, 23-year-old Polish international.

However Pellegrini refused to either confirm of deny West Ham's interest in the goalscorer when asked to confirm United's position during his press conference on Thursday.

" I won't talk about rumours," said the manager in response to a question asking whether the two clubs were already negotiating. "It is impossible to talk about so many names that are always involved around this club."

No fan of the mid-season transfer window, Pellegrini also called for Premier League chiefs to review - and potentially reform - football's January sales.

"I think that they must study it a little bit more how it works," he said. "I think it should exist, but there must be some rules about the way it works.

"Here in England the clubs have more money so they can make more changes, but it is similar everywhere. I don't think a player should be able to play in the same league for two different teams.

"I'm talking about Leicester three years ago when they were fighting for the title. In comes a big club and takes out two of their players. I don't think that would have been fair in the same season."
