West Ham are reported to have increased their bid for Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes.

The 25-year-old, who spent last season on loan with Everton is surplus to requirements at the Camp Nou and is available for transfer.

That situation sparked an initial bid from West Ham - thought to be around the ?15million mark - which was rejected by the La Liga side.

Since then. the Hammers, who are keen to boost their central midfield options this summer are reported to have increased the offer to ?20million - a figure still some ?5million short of Barcelona's valuation of the Portuguese international.

Gomes, who began life at Benfica's Academy is seeking a new club having previously described his three-year spell at Barca as "hell".

He joined the Catalan club in a 2016 move from Valencia, with Barca paying EUR35million up front with a further EUR20million to follow in add-ons, but failed to settle at the club.

Speaking in 2018. Gomes admitted that he had struggled with his move to one of the world's biggest clubs.

"The first six months were pretty good but then things changed," he said. "Maybe it's not the right word to use but it has turned into a kind of hell because I have started to feel more pressure.

"On more than one occasion I didn't want to leave my house because [of the way] people look at you. You have a fear of going on the street out of embarrassment and I don't talk to anybody."

However his career was rejuvenated by last season's spell at Goodison Park, where he was generally approved of by Everton fans - the majority of whom appear keen to make his season-long loan a permanent deal.
