You're off! Balbuena issued marching orders [video]

Fabian Balbuena's Copa America campaign ended in controversy last night after he was dismissed following a VAR review.

West Ham's central defender saw red in the quarter final clash between Paraguay and tournament favourites Brazil when he was issued his marching order by the referee after appearing to trip Roberto Firmino on the edge of the penalty box.

However the decision was only reached when the decision was reviewed; the original call, to award a penalty, was overturned whilst Balbuena was issued a straight red card as a result.

The match was to finish goalless but Brazil - who were booed by a number of their supporters regardless - earned themselves a semi final spot courtesy of a 4-3 penalty shootout win.

Balbuena's Paraguay had made the knock out phase of the competition as one of the two best placed third-placed teams, despite having failed to win any of their three Group B fixtures.

The Paraguayans opened their campaign with a 2-2 draw against whipping boys Qatar before drawing 1-1 with Argentina and losing 1-0 to Colombia thanks to a goal scored by Gustavo Cuellar, who has been previously linked with a move to West Ham.
