Fornals secures Euro Under 21 title

It's been a reasonably productive last few weeks for West Ham new boy Pablo Fornals.

A little more than a fortnight ago, the Spanish midfielder signed a lucrative five-year contract with West Ham having agreed to a £24million move from Villareal.

And last night Fornals was part of the Spanish Under 21 team that beat Germany 2-1 to claim the European crown, in what was a repeat of the 2017 FInal (albeit won by the Germans on that occasion).

West Ham's new number 18 featured in the starting line-up once again and played for 72 minutes before being replaced by Real Madrid's Borja Mayoral, who spent last season on loan at Levante.

In what proved to be a fairly even contest, Spain grabbed an early advantage through Fabian Ruiz, who opened the scoring with a lovely strike from outside the penalty box.

Ruiz was close to adding a second on 69 minutes but saw his effort saved, only for Dani Olmo to follow up with the rebound.

With time rapidly running out, the Germans pulled a goal back through Nadiem Amiri's defelcted shot but it was a case of too little, too late for the reigning champions.

Fornals played in every fixture for Spain during the tournament, whilst scoring two priceless goals for his country along the way.

He made his mark in the competition with goals against both Belgium and Poland in the Group stage, having played just 23 minutes of a 3-1 defeat against Italy in Spain's opening game of the tournament.

Introduced at half time against the Belgians in their following match, he scored in the fifth minute of added-on time to win the game 2-1 for Spain and keep their Championship hopes alive.

Rewarded with a starting place for the final group game against Poland, Fornals opened the scoring in the 17th minute before the Spanish strolled to a 5-0 win - a victory that resulted in them topping Group A.
