West Ham United may have failed to land their top summer target - but it hasn't prevented the club from naming a new number nine.

Javier Hernandez, who according to reports was offered to Valencia last week during the Hammers' failed attempt to sign Celta Vigo's Maxi Gomez, has been handed the shirt vacated by Andy Carroll for the 2019/20 season.

The Mexican international, who is in the final year of a three-year contract signed in the summer of 2017 looked destined to leave West Ham but has been handed a surprise reprieve in the wake of the failure to land Gomez.

Meanwhile Ukrainian winger Andriy Yarmolenko, who missed much of last season through injury has also changed shirt numbers ahead of the forthcoming campaign.

Yarmolenko, who spent his maiden season in Stratford in the number 20 shirt has adpoted the number seven shirt last worn by the recently-departed Marko Arnautovic.

West Ham have confirmed that the full list of squad numbers is yet to be determined, although Declan Rice will continue to wear the number 41 shirt.
