West Ham ended the Asia Trophy with the wooden spoon after going down 1-0 to Premier League relegation favourites Newcastle in Shanghai.

The only goal of the game arrived 34 minutes into the game and was scored by Japanese striker Yoshinori Muto, as West Ham's defence was breached with worrying ease.

West Ham, who were blitzed 4-1 by reigning champions Manchester City in the semi final can at least point to a bright opening in that match, in which they took the lead before being denied a cast-iron penalty.

However they never really got started in this morning's third-place play off and rarely looked like equalising once they had fallen behind to Muto's strike.

Once again the lack of VAR cost West Ham dearly as TV replays showed that Newcastle's goalscorer was marginally offside prior to beating Lukasz Fabianski to score the winning goal.

But West Ham didn't really deserve anything from a game in which they failed to produce a single shot on target and looked a long way from ready to start the new season.
