West Ham Women sign four-time Bundesliga winner

West Ham United have completed their fifth signing of the summer, completing the signing of German defender Katharina Baunach.

The 30-year-old - who can also play in midfield - joins from VfL Wolfsburg after a successful two seasons where she won back to back titles.

Baunach made her name with German giants Bayern Munich who she joined as a teenager, spending 11 years with the Bavarian club. It was a successful 11 years for Baunach, helping the side win their first two titles, as well as the Bundesliga Cup and DFB Cup in her 286 appearances.

The move to Wolfsburg followed with back to back double winning campaigns, winning the league and DFB Cup double in her two seasons with the club.

Also a German international, Baunach had international success with the Germany U17s and U19s, winning the Nordic Cup and European Championship respectively, before making her full internation debut in the 2009 Algarve Cup. Baunach made two appearances in that years Algarve Cup, in a 2-0 win over Finland and a 3-0 success over China.

Baunach, who will wear the number 11 shirt told the club's website: "I'm really excited to join West Ham United, this is a new experience for me and I'm really glad to get the opportunity to be here and play for this amazing club.

"You can see that the English league has grown so much and, for me, it's the most exciting league in the world right now. It's a new challenge that I'm ready for, and I'm so happy to be here."

Women's head coach Matt Beard was equally delighted to welcome the German to the club, he said: "I'm delighted to welcome Katharina to West Ham United. In her, we have brought in a talented and experienced defender who is capable of playing in a number of roles."

"In addition to signing a very talented footballer, we have also got another fantastic personality and voice in our dressing room. I'm looking forward to working with Katharina throughout the season."

Baunach and her fellow new signings will be hoping to make their Super League debuts when West Ham take on Arsenal in the season opener.
