City boss Daniel Farke claimed that his side were let down by VAR following a first half challenge by Sebastien Haller on defender Christoph Zimmermann.

The Hammers striker was perhaps somewhat fortuitous to escape a caution following his clumsy challenge against the German centre half, who was forced to retire from the match through injury several minutes after the incident.

And speaking during his post-match presser, Farke maintained that Haller should've been dismissed as a result of the tackle. "I'm a big fan of VAR but for me this game was a perfect example that it doesn't always work out," he said.

"It makes football not 100 per cent fair and although there were some things we could've done better, I've got the feeling that a few moments we were not responsible for cost us this game.

"My feeling was that we dominated the first 20 minutes and were controlling possession.

"I'm not sitting here asking for a red card but one thing is for sure - there was a tackle against my centre back and the ball was three yards away. There was no red card, no yellow card and not even a free kick.

"The outcome was that my centre back was injured. Two minutes later we were not able to substitute him, they had a counter [attack] and my defender was not able to sprint back because he was injured.

"He wasn't able to block the cross - and the player that was there was the player who made the tackle when the ball was three yards away. He scored and it changed the whole game.

"I don't think it was his intention to injure my player but if you play by the rules, you have to judge it by the rules. We just played on, there wasn't even a free kick; my player is on his way to hospital and the other player is on the shoulders of his team mates."
