Is Maldini the thorn in West Ham's side?

Any plans West Ham's may have in renewing their interest in Marseille midfielder Kevin Strootman could be thwarted by an Italian defensive legend.

West Ham were linked with a loan move for the 29-year-old Dutch international during the summer but failed to follow up on their interest at the time, with the club choosing to stick with the options already available to Manuel Pellegrini.

But having experienced a disappointing start to the 2019/20 campaign, the Hammers could be set to register their long-term interest in Strootman - who has appeared 13 times for Marseille so far in the 2019/20 campaign - once again.

However were they to do so, it is likely that United would face stiff competition from Paolo Maldini who was appointed as Milan's Sporting Strategy & Development Director in 2018.

Maldini is reported by sources in France to have identified Strootman as a potential January signing to boster Milan's squad for the second half of the season.

And with Marseille willing to allow the Dutchman to leave during the winter transfer window in order to ease their crippling financial situation, a deal may well be on the cards.

Whilst Maldini has also been linked with a potential bid for Arsenal's disgraced former captain Granit Xhaka, noises from inside West Ham have publicly indicated that there may be no incomings during January.

However with Declan Rice struggling to find his form at domestic level this season and with Jack Wilshere having failed to assuage concerns that he will not be up to the rigours of a full Premier League programme, Pellegrini is almost certain to be demanding investment with which to improve both his and West Ham's lot during January.
